Volunteer

Want to learn new skills, serve your community and help build a house all at the same time? Volunteer at the Morris Habitat ReStore! You’ll help the ReStore team earn profits that build affordable homes, but you won’t have to swing a hammer or get your boots muddy. If you’re looking for volunteer opportunities, the ReStore is the place!

Volunteers take on a wide range of responsibilities and are vital to keep the ReStore operating as a successful retail outlet. We can find tasks for high school students, college students on break, adults with free time between jobs, and retired people looking for a reason to get out of the house. Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older to volunteer without a chaperone in the store. Volunteers between 14-15 years of age must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.

Choose from many fun volunteer opportunities to lend your time and talents:

  • Administrative Support: Be a donation previewer and answer questions about potential furniture donations to the store.
  • Warehouse Support: Help with pricing and appraising, floor assistance or furniture repairs.
  • Cashier/Concierge: Work cash register proficiently, know sales promotions for the day, direct customers to the concierge desk, answer general questions and guide customers through store.
  • Truck Helper: Assist on one of our automatic-transmission box trucks to pick up donations to bring back to the ReStore.
  • Art Department: Help with the pricing and display of art work. Experience preferred but not required.
  • Lighting Department: Help with the pricing and display of various lighting fixtures and lamps.
  • Customer Service Support: Assist shopping customers with current sales promotions and answer general questions.
  • ReStore Collection Team: Research items to determine value, monitor and update store, speak to potential donors and help to ship and photograph items. We are also looking for subject experts in areas such as art, coins and valuables.

Current Volunteer Needs

  • Art Volunteers: Research items to determine value; stage and hang artwork; arrange the displays of china and better glassware.
  • Donation Door Assistants: This position receives donations and determines prices based on the value of the items. Thrift store or consignment experience or antique knowledge necessary. Customer service skills are a must. You must be able to lift heavy and bulky items.

Volunteer Hours

We need volunteers for mornings and afternoons Monday through Saturday and for evening shifts until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. The minimum shift is 2 hours. You may work as little as 4 hours a week, but we are happy to welcome regular volunteers who return for several days a week.

We also have special projects suitable for groups of 4 to 12 people who are looking for volunteer opportunities. Possible tasks could include rearranging our floor displays, giving the store an overall cleaning, or helping on days of major sales events. Contact Ben Roberts: ben.roberts@morrishabitat.org to inquire about scheduling your group.

Volunteer Rewards

First and foremost, you will have the warm feeling that comes from making a difference in the lives of others. More practical rewards include:

  • The chance to see new donations on the first day they are for sale
  • Parties and celebrations to honor our volunteers
  • Making new friends with your co-workers
  • The possibility of moving into a paid position
